How to Beat Daniel Negreanu
Monday, March 16th, 2009It’s tough to follow poker and not know Daniel Negreanu. The 32 year old Canadian nicknamed “Kid Poker” for his youthful appearance and childlike enthusiasm is every bit a part of today’s poker boom as any of the big poker celebrities. A tremendous tournament poker talent, Daniel has been named Cardplayer Poker Player of the Year, has four World Series of Poker bracelets, has two WPT crowns, which you can read about in articles about the World Poker Tour, and millions of dollars in tournament earnings. He has his own poker blog that any player can enjoy, his own poker video game, and his own poker website, FullContactPoker.com. Daniel is also a fearless cash game player, appearing regularly at Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio, where the highest stakes cash games in the world take place, and appearing on all three seasons of High Stakes Poker on GSN, even getting up from the table to do some commentary for a brief time. You can also see Daniel outmaneuvering the world’s toughest opposition on televised poker shows like Poker After Dark, Poker at the Plaza and the Ultimate Poker Challenge. How can you beat a player like this?
No Free Cards
Daniel Negreanu is known for his ability to outplay opponents after the flop. He is highly skilled at putting opponents on hand and detecting weakness. He also plays a wide variety of hands, making it difficult to put him on any particular holding. If you’re going to come into a pot and Daniel Negreanu is at the table, you’re going to want to come in raising. Do everything you can to get Daniel out of the pot early, or not to come in at all, because if you let him hang around, you could be in big trouble.
Bet For Value
One thing Daniel has struggled with is getting away from a hand on the river. Even when he makes one of his classic reads, telling the opponent what he likely holds, it’s hard for Daniel to give up on a good hand if he’s gone all the way to the end. Therefore, when you hit your miracle straight on the end, bet it. Don’t wait for Daniel Negreanu to bet for you, because if you’re behind, he probably won’t, costing you a precious opportunity to get some chips from a world class player.
Be a Protégé
If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Daniel has offered a golden opportunity for a lucky player to become his protégé, learning tips and tricks for becoming a poker star directly from Daniel himself. The first protégé, Brian Fidler, has already experienced some tournament success. Details on future protégé opportunities should be available on the FullContactPoker.com website.
